“I'm afraid of the darkness, and the hole in it; and I see it sometime of every day!” -Martin Luther, in Luther
Everything you love will perish. Try saying this to yourself at breakfast, watching the amber-colored tea swirl in the teapot. Try it on the tree, the clouds, the dog asleep under the table, the sparrow taking a bath in the neighbor's gutter. A magician’s act: Presto! On a morning you feel open enough to embrace it imagine it gone. Then pack the child’s lunch: smooth the thick peanut butter, the jeweled raspberry preserves, over the bread. Tell yourself the world must go on forever. This is why you feed her, imagining the day—orderly— unfolding, imagining what you teach her is true. Is something she will use. This is why, later, you will go out into the garden, among the calendula, rosemary, hibiscus, run your finger along the trunk of hawthorn as though it were the body of a lover, thinking of the child on the steps of the schoolyard, eating her sandwich. Thinking nothing, transparent air, where her hands are.

Remembering
by Rainer Maria Rilke
And you wait. You wait for the one thing that will change your life, make it more than it is— something wonderful, exceptional, stones awakening, depths opening to you.
In the dusky bookstalls old books glimmer gold and brown. You think of lands you journeyed through, of paintings and a dress once worn by a woman you never found again.
And suddenly you know: that was enough. You rise and there appears before you in all its longings and hesitations the shape of what you lived.

LOOK i'm no professional translator and by no means am i completely fluent in german but a while ago i got a bilingual eng/ger copy of das stundenbuch and some of these english translations are making me bonkers. WHY would you translate "wie ein Schiff / das mich trug / durch den tödlichsten Sturm" as "like a ship / that carried me / when the waters raged" INSTEAD of "like a ship / that carried me / through the deadliest storm" which is the literal translation?? which is comprehensible?? these translators are taking a lot of vibes-based liberties but it's like rilke is famously good at expressing himself!! that's the thing he is known for!! let him cook!!
#today in very low-stakes drama.#e#not really even drama im just old man yelling at cloud#im going to the amazon reviews and sorting by 1-star#joanna macy and anita barrows you will answer for your crimes

You who let yourselves feel: enter the breathing
by Rainer Maria Rilke English version by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy Original Language German
You who let yourselves feel: enter the breathing that is more than your own. Let it brush your cheeks as it divides and rejoins behind you.
Blessed ones, whole ones, you where the heart begins: You are the bow that shoots the arrows and you are the target.
Fear not the pain. Let its weight fall back into the earth; for heavy are the mountains, heavy the seas.
The trees you planted in childhood have grown too heavy. You cannot bring them along. Give yourselves to the air, to what you cannot hold.

(Abel Speaks)
I am not. The brother did something to me that my eyes didn't see. He veiled the light. He hid my face with his face. Now he is alone. I think he must still exist, for no one does to him what he did to me. All have gone the same way: all are met with his rage, beside him all are lost.
I sense my older brother lies awake as if accused. Night offers itself to me, not to him.
